2012 Spring Soundtrack

For those of you who know me well, you know I have the seasonal tradition of creating a life soundtrack - basically a CD full of songs I can't get enough of at the moment!  The mixes generally have some kind of theme, and I try to include songs that are not as well known, just for the point of diversifying the music palette of myself and others.  And yes - those of you who know me for doing this, also know I like to make many copies of the mix and pass among friends to enjoy and share with their friends!

Well.  This fabulous weather we've been having clearly calls for a fresh life soundtrack, but with friends and family so far away, I wanted to share the soundtrack here on The Invite Loft!  Check out the list of songs, and download (legally, of course) in the order below.  This I can assure you: you will be instantly in the mood for sunshine, bare legs, and bright colors after just one listen. ;)

Enjoy, friends!

DIY: Spring Wall Art

Looking for a fresh and colorful way to liven up your walls?  This is a super easy DIY idea that'll surely bring a smile to your face every time you pass by!  Just open and print the following graphics here:

They are square graphics, so you'll have to cut them out after you print.  For extra detail, you can leave a white border around the edges while cutting like you see in the files above.

Now, all you have to do is arrange them ever-so-prettily on your wall!  I would suggest printing them on white cardstock and posting them with tiny amounts of double-sided tape, sticky tack, or even stringing them together horizontally or vertically.  Here are a couple of ideas for hanging patterns:

New Design: Henna Inspired Bridal Shower

A friend of mine inspired this gorgeous design...who knew it would end up to be one of my favorites??  Bright colors + henna elephant = happy heart.  Don't get me wrong - this one wasn't the easiest I've created!  But a few quick lessons on henna techniques was all it took to get the ideas flowing on the initial design.  Those henna lessons were definitely worth it. :)

Happy Wedding Wednesday!!

DIY "Love Others" Decorative Sign

Sometimes it's so true that simple things can make us happy.  One of those things that I swear by is to focus on loving others, rather than yourself.  We get so completely wrapped up in making sure we're doing the right things, saying the right things, wearing the right things...but if we could just turn that lovin' around, imagine the way you could make others (and yourself!) feel.

My challenge to you this week: take some of the time you typically spend on yourself and reverse it.  Share the love with others, instead.

You didn't think I'd let the chance for a DIY slip through my fingers on this one, did you? ;)  Click on the link below and print the pretty little "Love Others" sign as a daily reminder.  Mine has a prime spot on my favorite bench in my apartment.  Let's go spread the joy.

No worries, the bottom text was downsized just a tad so yours doesn't get cut off like this...

Tehe, love how you can see my reflection taking the photo. ;)

DIY Frosted Glass Bottles + Magazine Flowers

So...much...DIYing...in one project!!  Watching my boyfriend drink out of these gorgeous blue bottles the other weekend got me thinking: DIY, DIY, DIY...

I'll tear the labels off.  Paint a design - wait no, use frosted glass spray paint.  Put flowers in them.  NO - handcrafted flowers.  Colorful, made of...MAGAZINES.  Use as decor at work.  Done.

Yes.  This was the actual process that went through my head in a matter of 10 seconds.  Funny how empty beer bottles and old magazines can quickly become a new spring decoration for my shelving unit. ;)  Ready to try it yourself?

Here's what you'll need:

Maybe throw tape, wire, stapler, glue, and sticks in there, too - if you plan to get extra crafty with those magazine flowers! PS, those bottles were originally Bud Light Platinum, I believe.  In case you love the bold blue color as much as I do. ;)

Instructions:

1. Tape off the bottles any way you like using the painter's tape.  I chose to tape off the top of my bottles, resulting in the frosted glass effect on the bottom half. (Check out the finished photos below.)

2. Using a "frosting" spray paint, go to a WELL-ventilated area, and spray your bottles!  Be sure to keep the can about 10-12 inches away and just do one coat at a time.  Two should be plenty.  This will prevent any dripping or weird frosted patterns on your glass bottle.

3. There are countless ways to do magazine flowers, and plenty of websites out there will give you detailed step-by-step instructions.  (YouTube is great for this!)  Here are a few resources you can use for different flower ideas:

Once you've made your flowers, use wire/tape/stapler/glue to attach it to a stick that will act as the stem.    I used a mixture of glue and tape to secure 6 inch wooden sticks to each flower, just enough to keep it secure in the bottle.

Presto!  A new spring decoration to display on your mantle, bookshelves, wherever you'd like!  (Party centerpieces, anyone??)  It brings a pop of color to the room with little effort and that homemade touch.  If you have questions about this DIY, comment below or email me at jlynn.stratman@gmail.com.

Ta-ta for now!

Men's Accessories Stationery 2012

Who says girls get to have all the stationery fun?  Designing trendy male stationery for a friend last week had me inspired to create a mini-line of stationery featuring men's accessories.  So I created a few stylishly chic designs for men - from the closet to paper.  The best part?  You can match the ink color to the envelope color!  Oh, yes.

Guys, like these designs or interested in having your signature accessory designed on personal stationery?  I'd be happy to help.  Email me at jlynn.stratman@gmail.com.

How To: Get Personal with Stationery

Let me ask you a question.  Do you attend networking events?  Do you have a good relationship with the company you work for or school you attend?  Do you prefer customized over generic?

Ok yes, that was three questions.

The point is, if you answered "yes" to any of those three questions, you may want to consider a small investment in personal stationery.  (If you said "no" to all three, email me.  I have more questions for you.)

I happen to be a strong believer in the fact that handwritten notes will never die; the romanticism of taking the extra effort to compose a handwritten thank you or congratulations or whatever the special occasion may be is a truly appreciated art form - particularly from those we refer to as our seniors.  Personally, I have collected stationery for years and find myself using it to write to family and friends on a weekly basis.  All of that being said, I know what your first thoughts may be. (1) That sounds terribly expensive, and (2) I have no idea what my stationery would even look like.

Fear not!  I have solutions to both of your concerns.  First of all, The Invite Loft prides itself at creating fully customized designs at a very convenient price.  (Go to our FAQ page for more on this.)  Secondly, as the designer, I work with you every step of the way in developing the perfect design for you.  Bonus, I'm about to share with you some of my favorite tips for dreaming up ideas for your personal stationery design.

Colors
Possibly the first thing you'll want to think about for your personal stationery design is colors.  Not sure what colors or combos to use?  Look at your closet.  What colors do you find yourself wearing most often?  Look around your home or apartment.  Does one or multiple colors stick out?  If you're not seeing a specific color or color pattern, that's an answer, too.  Perhaps you prefer the more eclectic mix of colors, and you enjoy the chaos.  Getting the colors right is ultra important, as they create moods within people and will do so with those who receive your stationery.  This site has a simple chart that will help you get started with color choices.

Fonts
Many times, personal stationery is designed with the name of the person printed somewhere in the design, whether it's across the top, in the bottom right corner, or worked into an image.  The font you choose strongly conveys the attitude of the stationery, so be careful in making your decision on this one.  The problem is, there are literally countless font styles out there to choose from!!  This is where you would want to go to your stationer for help.  Just be sure to tell him or her what you'll primarily be using the stationery for; this is a good starting indication of the type of font styles you should look at.

Balance
Before you jump into fun graphics and pretty little pictures to add to your stationery, think about the importance of symmetry to you.  For instance, I am naturally drawn to designs that are asymmetrical because I enjoy the off-balance and interesting element added to the design.  You may greatly prefer a symmetrical design, due to the perfect balance and intuitive appearance, making it pleasing to the eye.  A general assumption is that left-brained people, those who are naturally logical thinkers, prefer symmetrical, while right-brained people, those who have a built-in creative mind, prefer asymmetrical designs.  Just a tip in case you're having trouble with this one. ;)

Graphics
If you so choose to include some sort of graphic on your stationery, do so in a fairly discreet manner.  The last thing you want is for your graphic to overtake half of your writing space, leaving very little room to actually thank the person you wanted to thank!  Think about objects in your everyday life, as well as where you live, hobbies you enjoy, and achievements you've done to brainstorm ideas for this one.  Don't feel pressure to include a graphic; sometimes, simple, clean, and elegant is the most fitting choice.

Printable: St. Patrick's Day Straw Signs

Wow, is it really Wednesday already??  Insane how fast these days fly by sometimes!

It's been awhile since I last posted printables for you all, so I got a little "happy go lucky" and came up with some very cute straw toppers for St. Patrick's Day!!  Shades of green with a touch of pink, these little guys are super easy to DIY:

1. Print the DIY page here.

2. Cut all around the ovals except for that tiny space where the two ovals meet on each straw topper.  This will be your folding line.

3. Fold the toppers in half, so the ovals mirror each other.

4. On the open end, dab a teensy amount of glue right inside.  Allow the glue to dry for at least 10 minutes.  Or 11.

5. Slide the cute little guy onto your straw, and never mix up your drink at a St. Patrick's Day party again!

I also included a blank straw topper so you can design your own.  Get creative and write your name on the picture side to really claim your drink territory. ;) If you see me around, I'll probably be sporting these guys for most of March.  They're too cute to use only one day!

And yes, if you were wondering, that is a Dunkin' Donuts straw in the photos.  What can I say?  I'm a loyal DD customer!

Catersource Convention: Las Vegas

Ah, Las Vegas...a city full of dreams and fantasies designed within invisible walls of the ultimate adult playground.  A recent trip for work happened to land me in this very city for three fabulous days, and although cooped inside of Caesar's Palace for the majority of my time there, I managed to do a little solo exploration.  And of course, there's always time for a photo shoot, right? ;)

Soon to come are gorgeous photos from table and floral displays that border the world of event and wedding trends - seriously, you won't want to miss these!  For now, enjoy the a few of my favorite snapshots from my self-led tour on the infamous Las Vegas Strip...

That last one?  Me at the Catersource Convention Welcome Reception...with a case of the red eyes. ;)  Have a productive Monday!

New Design: Inspired by Kate Spade

If you love a good pop of color, clean lines, and whimsical finishing touches, you're probably a fan of Kate Spade. It's hard not to fall in love with the designer; the timeless yet trendy accessories and garments that are revealed throughout the year always includes something to be desired...if not every single piece!

Browsing through the colorfully vivid Kate Spade store in Las Vegas this week, I couldn't help feeling inspired from all of the prettiness, and as is natural, a design immediately evolved inside my head.  I had a quick chance to jot this one down on the back of a business card before it escaped me, and later - ta da - was able to complete the design on the plane ride back to Saint Louis!  Thoughts?

My favorite detail: the fresh combination of a typewriter font against a more whimsical one.  Loving the clean, editorial look it created!
